EDITOR'S NOTE EDITORIAL ADVISORY BOARD Industry in Motion While preparing this issue, I had the opportunity to interview Lorrie Klein, MD, a thought leader in injectables and aesthetic lasers and one of the rst contributors to MedEsthetics magazine. Like many dermatologists, she entered the specialty on the cusp of the cosmetic explosion and has created her own strategies for researching new technologies and procedures to serve her growing patient base. This interview was yet another reminder of the medical aesthetic industrys rapid growth and continuing innovation. Its part of what makes my job so interesting and part of what allows practitioners to offer continually improving cosmetic results for an increasingly broad patient base. Intense pulsed light has been available for close to two decades, yet engineers continue to nd ways to make these treatments safer, more targeted and more predictable. On page 24, physicians and laser engineers share some of the most signicant advances in IPL technology and how these changes affect patient care and operator comfort. Fat transfer has received a lot of attention in both scientic Inga Hansen sessions and consumer media, but questions remain regarding Executive Editor/Associate Publisher optimal fat grafting techniques and the longevity of results. For One of the most recent targets for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has been physicians' use of foreign-sourced injectables. Shifting Volume on page 48, we spoke with physicians well versed in cosmetic fat transfer to share their techniques for harvesting, preparing and injecting adipose tissue. As the industry has grown, regulators and state boards have at times struggled with issues such as the widespread off-label use of products and how to monitor a sub-specialty that crosses multiple medical specialties. One of the most recent targets for the United States Food and Drug Administration has been physicians use of foreign-sourced injectables. On page 84, Linda W. Lewis brings physicians up-to-date on recent FDA action and offers advice on how to protect your patients and your practice from the risks of adulterated products and regulatory action. As this issue goes to print, we are preparing to attend the 71st Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology. Here we will have a chance to see a whole new generation of products and equipment developed to build on the results already obtained in facilities across the country. We look forward to sharing those advances with you in future issues. ihansen@creativeage.com 818.782.7328, ext. 226 2 MARCH/APRIL 2013 | MedEsthetics Mary Lee Amerian, MD Santa Monica Laser and Skin Care Center, Santa Monica, CA Saul R.
