BEST PRACTICES Fellowship Finder Launches Just For Men With men now accounting for close to 10% of medical cosmetic procedures performed annually—according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery's annual statistics—medical aesthetic practices are looking for new ways to reach out to males in their communities. Leur Lab (leurlab.com), an Orange County, California-based aesthetic practice, has created a comprehensive nonsurgical aesthetic package just for men. The practice currently offers esthetic treatments, injectables, body contouring and laser treatments, sold in monthly, tiered packages—similar to a gym membership—for both sexes. The new aesthetic platform offers combination procedures that address the unique skincare and aging concerns of men. 8 SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013 | MedEsthetics Diode Laser More Effective Than IPL In Laser Hair Removal Diode lasers and IPL are both highly effective treatment tools for permanent hair reduction with the diode laser showing increased efficacy over IPL but the downside of a more painful treatment. For "Photoepilation with a diode laser vs. intense pulsed light: a randomized, intrapatient left-to-right trial" (British Journal of Dermatology, June 2013), researchers A Klein, et al, of the department of dermatology, University Hospital Regensburg, Regensburg, Germany, treated unwanted axillary hair of 30 subjects with the Lumenis LightSheer XC diode system on one side and the Ellipse Flex PPT IPL device on the other. Each patient received six treatments performed at four-week intervals. Hair count was measured at baseline and three and 12 months post-treatment using closeup photography. Secondary endpoints included patient-rated efficacy, treatment-related pain, adverse events and treatment duration. The study revealed that both devices significantly reduced hair counts. Mean reductions from baseline were 59.7% at three months and 69.2% at 12 months for the diode laser and 42.4% and 52.7% for IPL treatment. The diode laser treatment induced significantly more pain [3.7 ± 2.1 (DL) vs. 1.6 ± 1.4 (IPL); P < 0.01; visual analogue scale] but the treatment could be performed more quickly [33.1 ± 3.8 s (DL) vs. 40.1 ± 5.0 s (IPL); P < 0.01]. No severe side effects were reported for either therapy. © ISTOCKPHOTO.COM With medical schools and residency programs still struggling to incorporate aesthetic and cosmetic medicine into curriculum and training, one dermatologist took it upon herself to help dermatology residents find advanced training. Melanie Palm, MD, MBA, worked with the American Society for Dermatologic Surgeons to create the DermSurg Fellowship Finder, a database of all Mohs, procedural, cosmetic and laser surgical felMelanie Palm, MD, MBA lowships in the United States and Canada. "The ASDS has the opportunity to shape young, bright and eager dermatology minds," says Dr. Palm, who practices in Solana Beach, California. "The Fellowship Finder serves as an excellent reference for residents to receive indepth, pertinent information for all dermatologic surgically oriented fellowships in the U.S." To date, 53 dermatology fellowship programs are included in the Fellowship Finder, which is organized by geographic area and program type. The database also includes contact information and program descriptions. Its creation is a result of a 2010-2011 ASDS Future Leaders Network project, an initiative designed to prepare young doctors to be the next generation of leaders in dermatologic surgery.
