FOCUS MEDICAL TO PROVIDE WORLDWIDE SERVICE FOR SOFTLIGHT LASERS Focus Medical, manufacturer of the NaturaLase line of laser equipment for cosmetic dermatology, is now the exclusive provider of service, parts and supplies for SoftLight lasers. Focus Medical will also be selling new SoftLight lasers under the NaturaLase brand. For more than 12 years, Focus Medical has provided parts and supplies to Telsar Laboratories on an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) basis. Telsar private-labeled the devices as the "SoftLight Series," including the model LT100. SoftLight lasers are available to both day spas and medical spas. The low-energy lasers utilize a proprietary, light-absorbing lotion to remove excess hair. In March 2012, Telsar Laboratories shut down its operations after 29 years in business. As the OEM, Focus Medical is now the only company to provide service, parts, supplies, technical support, and customer service for SoftLight lasers. Maintenance service includes both break-fix repair and annual or multi-year service contracts. For more information, visit focusmedical.com. APOLLO ENDOSURGERY ACQUIRES ALLERGAN OBESITY INTERVENTION DIVISION Apollo Endosurgery, a developer of medical devices and endoscopic surgical procedures, has entered into a definitive agreement to purchase the obesity intervention division of Allergan for up to $110 million. The total includes an upfront cash payment of $75 million, minority equity interest of $15 million, and up to $20 million in additional contingent consideration to be paid upon achievement of certain regulatory and sales milestones. The obesity intervention division is responsible for manufacturing and marketing the LAP-BAND adjustable gastric band system and the ORBERA intra-gastric balloon system. "The acquisition of the LAP-BAND and ORBERA technologies will provide Apollo Endosurgery with a strong revenue stream that will enable us to expand our investment in innovative solutions that focus on improving patient outcomes in both the bariatric and endoscopic spaces," said Dennis McWilliams, president and CEO of Apollo Endosurgery. "The addition of these devices will complement Apollo's portfolio to include less invasive bariatric product offerings while expanding our domestic sales channel, and increasing our global reach into more than 40 countries." A POTENTIAL STEP IN QUANTIFYING SUN DAMAGE Researchers in New South Wales, Australia, have created a Dermal Elastin Morphology Index (DEMI), using ex vivo skin samples and multiphon microscopy (MPM). For the study, "A Quantitative Approach to Histopathological Dissection of Elastin-Related Disorders Using Multiphoton Microscopy," (British Journal of Dermatology, October 2013) P Tong, .L. et al, took cross sections of skin samples from subjects with elastin-related disorders. They used MPM—due to its use of infrared light and autofluorescent signals—to image the samples through the intact epidermis. Image analysis software was then used to three-dimensionally quantify the elastic fibers. The authors used the imaging to develop the DEMI, which is calculated as the ratio of elastic fiber surface area and volume. They write: "Quantitative scoring of sun-damaged skin using DEMI correlated with qualitative histopathological grading of the severity of solar elastosis. Furthermore, this approach was applied to changes in elastic fibre architecture in other disorders, such as pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE), PXE-like syndrome, elastofibroma, focal dermal elastosis, anetoderma, mid-dermal elastolysis and striae distensae. We imaged elastic fibres in intact ex vivo skin imaged en face through the epidermis, indicating that this approach could be used in vivo." RABKIN NAMED DIRECTOR OF MINIMALLY INVASIVE FACIAL REJUVENATION Dimitry Rabkin, MD, of Esthetica MD, in Bergen County, New Jersey, has been appointed director of minimally invasive facial rejuvenation at Lenox Hill Hospital. Dr. Rabkin is double board certified by the American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine and American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery and has extensive experience in injectables and noninvasive medical aesthetic procedures. The hospital notes that the new position was developed in recognition of the fact that surgery is not always necessary to provide the results patients seek in helping them achieve and maintain a younger, fresher appearance. The appointment will allow Dr. Rabkin to share his skills and expertise with fellows and residents who are eager to learn the latest approaches in the field of minimally invasive facial rejuvenation.
