Cosmetic giant Elizabeth Arden has joined the throng of companies offering skincare products sold exclusively through physicians with the debut of its Elizabeth Arden Rx Triple Protection Factor Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 50+ (TPF 50). The company unveiled the new antiaging sunscreen at the American Academy of Dermatology meet- ing in Denver. TPF 50 is almost twice as effective as the nearest competi- tor in reducing key biomarkers for topical skin protection, according to a small, 40-patient study published in the March 2014 issue of the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology (JDD). Authors Enzo Emanuele, MD, PhD, James M. Spencer, MD, and Martin Braun, MD, conducted the JDD double-blind irradiation study, comparing TPF 50 to fi ve other primary dermatology products with SPF 50 sunscreens. "TPF 50 improves the genomic and proteomic integrity of skin cells after repeated exposure to ultraviolet radiation, ultimately re- ducing the risk of skin aging and non-melanoma skin cancer," the authors concluded. "TPF 50 contains two new technologies," says Lavinia Popescu, manager, skincare product development, Elizabeth Arden. "The fi rst is specifi c silicates of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide that allow the sun protection product to achieve SPF 50 with only 5.5% of each of these sun-refl ecting ele- ments. TPF 50 not only protects better but looks better as well. It contains a low concentration of a universal pigment that allows it to blend beautifully with any skin color while remaining virtually invisible. "The second new technology is a special blend of antiox- idants that scavenge all kinds of free radicals, not only in the stratum corneum and epidermis but also in the dermis," Popescu adds. "The DNA repair enzymes in TPF 50 are not new or exclusive. It is the combination of antioxidants, DNA repair enzymes and the technologically superior SPF that make TPF 50 truly different." The antioxidant complex contains: • Arazine, a patented antioxidant that blocks infl ammation by modulating G-protein signal transduction pathways; • L-Carnosine, a dipeptide antioxidant that protects protein from glycation and carbonylation; • L-Ergothioneine, a free radical scavenger that protects DNA. These are joined by the DNA Enzyme Complex, a combination of Photoyase, Endonuclease and 8-oxoguanine Glycosylase. These three well-known repair enzymes may also help protect against free radical damage. "TPF 50 is interesting," says skin cancer specialist Ali Hen- di, MD, clinical assistant professor of dermatology, George- town University Hospital, Maryland. "The idea makes sense and the in vitro study defi nitely shows a benefi t compared to SPF alone. The shortcoming is that we do not know if the benefi t of the changes seen in the analysis of the skin is long- lasting and if it has clinical relevance (e.g., reduced rate of skin cancer). These are studies that need long-term follow up. The carcinogenic effects of UV rays on the skin are cumula- tive (just like smoking) and it takes years to manifest as skin cancer, hence the need for long-term studies." In addition to TPF 50, Elizabeth Arden Rx products will in- clude an antiaging line, pigmentation line and a hydration line, each with its own in-offi ce peel. Clinical trials are underway for these products. Although considered luxury products, they will retail at attractive price points. For example, TPF 50 will sell for $56 (1.7 ounces).
