72 SEPTEMBER 2014 | Med Esthetics survival rates for African Americans (78%) are signifi cantly lower than that of Caucasians (92%). This is due to the common misconception that protection from the sun is not necessary for those with darker skin tones. In an effort to increase the use of sunscreen among patients with darker skin tones, cosmeceutical manufacturer La Roche-Posay has joined forces with the Women's Dermatologic Society (WDS) to raise awareness and encourage behavioral change. The two organizations will educate the population on two key motivators: Sunscreen can make your skin more healthy and beautiful; and sunscreens don't have to feel greasy or leave a chalky fi nish. This approach came about after a study—presented at the 2014 American Academy of Dermatology meeting and recognized as an award-winning study by the Skin of Color Symposium in Denver—showed that daily sunscreen use can improve the overall quality of skin for all skin tones. In this study, 90% of Latinos showed an improvement in the intensity of dark spots, and 64% of those with skin of color showed an improvement in the number of dark spots following regular sunscreen application. Throughout 2014, volunteers with the SOS—Save Our Skin campaign will spread awareness about the benefi ts of sunscreen at several national events. VALEANT ANNOUNCES APPROVAL OF JUBLIA FOR ONYCHOMYCOSIS The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the New Drug Application (NDA) for Valeant's Jublia (efi naconazole 10% topical solution), the fi rst topical triazole approved for the treatment of onychomycosis of the toenails. Jublia is applied to the nail daily from a bottle with a built-in fl ow-through brush applicator. It dries quickly and there is no need to remove excess product. The two positive pivotal studies—with 1,655 subjects collectively—that were the basis for approval were published last year in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. The studies' primary endpoint was complete cure at Week 52, which required that the target nail show no clinical involvement and no evidence of fungus present by both KOH testing and a negative fungal culture. In Study 1, 17.8% of subjects treated with Jublia were completely cured, compared to only 3.3% of subjects treated with vehicle. In Study 2, 15.2% of subjects treated with Jublia were completely cured, compared to only 5.5% of subjects treated with vehicle. The most commonly reported adverse events in patients treated with Jublia were application site dermatitis and application site vesicles.
