58 MARCH 2015 | Surgical Aesthetics A new study, presented at the Sixth Euro- pean Symposium of Aesthetic Surgery of the Breast in Milan, by Robert Galiano, MD, of the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, showed a reduction in wound healing complications following breast reduction surgery when the PICO Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) system was applied postoperatively. The study included 200 bilateral breast reduction patients at six leading plastic surgery centers in the U.S., Europe and South Africa. For each patient, PICO was used as an incision management system and compared to the standard postoperative wound care procedure (surgical strips). The breasts treated with PICO showed signifi cantly fewer overall healing complications and a 38% relative reduction in surgical dehiscence. Scar quality was also evaluated at 42 and 90 days post-surgery. Both POSAS (Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale) and VAS (Visual Analogue Scale) scoring systems dem- onstrated superior scar quality in PICO-treated breasts at days 42 and 90. As a result, facial implants are experiencing a resurgence in popularity. Today, surgeons can choose from a growing range of chin, jowl, malar and even temporal implants. Doctors who would like to learn more about facial implants—including how to select the right implants for your patient and proper positioning and anchoring—may benefi t from courses offered through Implantech and the Medical Innovations & Training Institute (MITI) in Hen- derson, Nevada. On May 3, 2015, MITI will host a seminar with Barry Eppley, MD, William Binder, MD, and Steven Mobley, MD, designed to help surgeons understand the latest techniques in facial implant procedures and how to obtain the best outcomes in facial contouring. The course will include lectures and hands-on cadaver time. For more information visit facialimplantcourses.com.
