Philip Werschler, MD Spokane Dermatology Clinic and Aesthetic Image Medical Spa, Spokane, WA ihansen@creativeage.com • 603.354.3291 On November 1, 2005, we launched the fi rst issue of MedEsthetics, a magazine designed to support private medical practice and medspa owners working in the fi eld of cosmetic medicine. Our goal then—as it is now—is to help our readers understand and better manage the unique challenges of attracting and serving an elective medicine patient base by providing educational articles on practice management and marketing, while simultaneously keeping the industry abreast of changing regulations, newsworthy events and new products and procedures. The entire team here at MedEsthetics is grateful for the support the industry has shown us over these 10 years, and we wanted to celebrate this milestone by launching our fi rst annual Best of Medical Aesthetics awards. We asked our readers to submit nominations in nine categories, ranging from best multi-physician practice to happiest employees and most innovative marketing campaign. We received hundreds of submissions and are thrilled to introduce the winners on page 20. The medical aesthetics industry has experienced near continuous growth for the past decade, which has created both triumphs and challenges for providers and patients. Concerns that previously had few good solutions, such as hyperpigmentation and hair restoration, have experienced a surge in innovation. On page 32, physicians share their top treatment protocols for patients with melasma, sun damage and post-infl ammatory hyperpigmentation. If you turn to page 48, you can read about the latest surgical and noninvasive methods that physicians are utilizing to help patients with thinning hair. EDITOR'S NOTE Ten Years On Inga Hansen Executive Editor/Associate Publisher Dermal fi llers have helped fuel the enormous growth and popularity of cosmetic procedures by opening these services up to a much wider patient base. Unfortunately, as the use of fi llers has grown, so has the incidence of complications. Though extremely rare, serious complications such as skin necrosis and blindness have come to the attention of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and several legal fi rms. On page 72, we offer guidance on how to protect your patients and your practice from serious fi ller-related adverse events. As we look forward to the next 10 years, we again want to reiterate how much we have enjoyed learning about this industry and how much we appreciate your continued support. The medical aesthetics industry has experienced near continuous growth for the past decade, which has created both triumphs and challenges for providers and patients.
