Avram, MD, JD, was elected president of the Ameri- can Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS) on April 7, 2017. He is the director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Dermatology Laser & Cosmetic Center, faculty director for Laser and Cosmetic Training in the department of dermatology at Harvard Medical School, and associate professor of dermatology at Harvard Medical School. "I am honored to serve the more than 4,000 scien- tists, engineers, allied health professionals, physicians, and members of industry who continue to defi ne and expand the fi eld," said Dr. Avram. "It is a true honor and privilege to safeguard and promote the ASLMS in every way possible, as it is the most important and innovative society for the development of the fi eld." A PA X TO ACQU I R E SY N ERON M EDICA L Aesthetic device manufacturer Syneron Medical has en- tered into an agreement with Apax Partners, a global pri- vate equity advisory fi rm, under which an affi liate of funds advised by Apax Partners will acquire all of the outstanding shares of Syneron-Candela for $11 per share in cash in a transaction valued at approximately $397 million. The Syneron-Candela board of directors has unanimously ap- proved the transaction, which is expected to be completed during the third quarter of 2017. "We have identifi ed the medical aesthetics market as a highly attractive investment area given its long-term growth prospects," said Steven Dyson, partner and co- head of healthcare at Apax Partners. "Syneron-Candela is very well positioned to capture this opportunity with its highly diversifi ed geographic footprint, broad and market- leading products portfolio, exceptional R&D; capabilities and cutting-edge technology. We are looking forward to partnering with the Syneron-Candela team to continue its strong growth trajectory, and to seeing the even greater benefi ts it can deliver for customers and patients." ASA PS A N NOU NCES N EW OFFICERS The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) elected new offi cers during the Aesthetic Meet- ing 2017 in April. Clyde H. Ishii, MD, is the new presi- dent. Dr. Ishii has served on the ASAPS board of directors and has been a contributing member on multiple ASAPS committees. He is currently the chief of plastic surgery at Honolulu Shriners Hospital and has been in private practice in Honolulu since 1986. "It is a distinct honor to assume the role of president of ASAPS. I look forward to continuing to work with my peers, the top, board certifi ed aesthetic plastic surgeons in the industry, to grow the society's membership and to continue our mission of patient safety and education," said Dr. Ishii. Other newly elected offi cers serving on ASAPS' Executive Committee include: President-Elect: W. Grant Stevens, MD of Los Angeles. Dr. Stevens is the medical director of Marina Plastic Surgery and a clinical professor of surgery at the University of Southern California division of plastic & reconstructive surgery. Vice President: Charles H. Thorne, MD of New York City. Dr. Thorne is chairman of the department of plastic surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital and Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital and is a tenured professor at NYU. Treasurer: Herluf G. Lund Jr., MD of St. Louis. Dr. Lund is the president of St. Louis Cosmetic Surgery, a four-member private plastic surgery practice, and is a past-president of the Missouri Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. Secretary: William P. Adams, Jr., MD of Dallas. Dr. Adams is in private practice and is also an associate clinical professor of plastic surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center; past-president of ASERF (Aesthetic Society Educa- tion and Research Foundation); current ASAPS program chair; and founder of The Plastic Surgery Channel. R EPLICEL I NJ ECTOR R ECEI V ES U.S. PATENT RepliCel Life Sciences has been granted a U.S. patent (No. 9,616,182) covering signifi cant components of its novel, multi-needle dermal injection device. The patent relates to technologies designed to enable better control and consis- tency of needle action and product deposition. The patent also relates to the element designed to numb the skin prior to injection with the intended effect of reducing, if not eliminating, the need for local anesthetic prior to aesthetic injection procedures.
