NOVAN AWARDED $7.8 MILLION CONTRACT TO DEVELOP THERMAL BURN TREATMENT The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has entered into a contract with Novan Therapeutics (novantherapeutics. com) to advance the development of a nitric oxide-based therapy as a countermeasure to treat thermal burns caused by a bioterrorism attack or nuclear device. The Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), an agency within the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response, will provide funding of $7.8 million over two years. The contract will support the pharmaceutical development of the Nitric Oxide Advanced Healing (NOAH) technology including formulation work, nonclinical toxicology, and proof of concept studies in models of deep partial thickness and full thickness thermal injuries. Nitric oxide has been demonstrated throughout peer-reviewed literature to speed the migration of epidermal cells, stimulate new blood vessel growth, modulate inflammation, and re-model the wound bed. "The link between nitric oxide and the body's ability to heal is well established. The challenge is to create stable nitric oxide drugs that 'perform on command' and deliver a controlled, sustained dose that will supplement the body's ability to regenerate tissue," said Nathan Stasko, PhD, president of Novan. "Our platform technology has allowed us to pursue the development of drugs intended to harness the healing power of nitric oxide with results extending far beyond bioterrorism. We believe the NOAH technology creates a gateway into regenerative medicine and could lead to therapies that can help heal both acute and chronic wounds." LE MIEUX LAUNCHES BIELLE INSTITUTE FOR ESTHETICIANS Skincare manufacturer Le Mieux Cosmetics has opened the Bielle Institute. The 5,000-square-foot facility, located in Pasadena, California, will offer training for estheticians on antiaging skincare products and how to integrate them with a variety of devices and facial techniques. The two-story Institute will also host private events. "Le Mieux's audience has really grown over the past few years, and I felt it was time to establish a formal environment in which to share knowledge about Le Mieux products, ingredients and facial techniques," says Janel Luu, CEO of Le Mieux Cosmetics. "We can now welcome guests from all over the world to a beautiful and relaxed setting featuring luxurious, minimal, contemporary décor to participate in educational seminars and events." DERMATOLOGISTONCALL LAUNCHES MOBILE APPLICATION Iagnosis, in partnership with Newton Consulting, has launched a mobile platform for its online dermatology care site, dermatologistoncall.com. The site offers online access to board-certified dermatologists. Patients create a private and secure account where they can submit photographs and descriptions of their condition and receive a response from a dermatologist within three business days. The visit concludes with the delivery of a treatment plan containing the patient's history, current condition and diagnosis by the dermatologist, which may include a recommendation for an in-office visit, if necessary. Required prescriptions are sent electronically to the patient's pharmacy. "The mobile application will enable our patients to upload diagnostic pictures from their smart phones in a very seamless, fun and intuitive manner," said Scott Focer, COO of Iagnosis. "Additionally, the mobile app will facilitate direct messaging between dermatologists and their patients as a follow-up to their diagnosis, treatment and counsel."
