medestheticsmagazine.com | SEPTEMBER 2014 7 Chairs provide great support during long meetings, but they may also be holding us back, according to researchers from the Olin Business School at Washington University, St. Louis. Markus Baer, PhD, associate professor of organizational behavior, and An- drew Knight, PhD, assistant professor of organizational behavior, designed a study wherein participants worked in teams for 30 minutes to develop and record a university recruitment video. Each team met in a room that either had chairs arranged around a table or no chairs at all. After making the videos, research as- sistants rated how the teams worked together and the quality of the videos, while the participants rated how territorial their team members were in the group process. Baer and Knight found that the teams who stood had greater physiological arousal—measured by small sensors around their wrists—and were less territorial about ideas than those in the seated arrangement. Members of the standing groups reported that their team members were less protective of their ideas, which led to more information sharing and higher quality videos. The paper, "Get Up, Stand Up: The Effects of a Non- Sedentary Workspace on Information Elaboration and Group Performance," was published June 12 online in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science. For years, patients were encouraged to ask doctors about their board certifi cations and training, leading physicians to place their credentials front and center on their practice websites and marketing materials. But today, sales are increasingly peer-to-peer, with patients seeking out testimonials on RealSelf, social media and physician review sites. This change in focus led one Chicago-based plastic surgeon, Steven Dayan, MD, to revamp his online strategy. During a presentation at the 2014 American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (A AFPRS) meeting, Dr. Dayan revealed that he recently redesigned his website to lead with a "Real Women, Real Stories" campaign. He moved his CV back and now fea- tures images and testimonials of his most satisfi ed patients on the site's opening page. The result: bounce rates went down, consults went up and the patients that contact the practice from the website are more qualifi ed leads than those referred by his website in past years. Physicians who would like to add spa services and those who are interested in con- verting their clini- cal practices to a medspa environ- ment may benefi t from working with the profession- als at the newly formed Universal Spa Equipment division of Univer- sal Companies. A long-time supplier of esthetic devices, skincare products and spa consult- ing services, Universal is now helping business owners build out their ideal spa or medspa through consulting services, design services and a full line of products—includ- ing skin care, hydrotherapy, and even fi tness and wellness equipment. Once the space is designed and launched, the company provides ongoing support in the form of dedicated service managers. For more information, contact 800.558.5571, universalcompanies.com.
