Philip Werschler, MD Spokane Dermatology Clinic and Aesthetic Image Medical Spa, Spokane, WA EDITOR'S NOTE 6 MARCH 2015 | Med Esthetics ihansen@creativeage.com • 603.354.3291 During his presentation on laser skin resurfacing at the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery meeting in January, facial plastic surgeon J. Kevin Duplechain, MD, of Tulane University reminded physicians that, based on the thermal relaxation time of skin, they need to deliver 5mJ of energy in 0.8ms or less to avoid overheating the epidermis. When working with a long-pulse fractional CO 2 laser, which can create a wider wound due to its longer pulse duration, you can still provide an optimal outcome by reducing the treatment density, he noted, before urging physicians to "Learn everything you can about the lasers you own." Skin resurfacing, whether achieved through chemical peeling, ablative lasers or microdermabrasion, is a cornerstone of aesthetic rejuvenation. For "Off With the Old" on page 28, we asked dermatologists and estheticians to share their strategies on how to choose the right skin resurfacing modality for specifi c patient groups and concerns. Scientifi c meetings and industry publications are invaluable tools in helping providers achieve the best outcomes and stay abreast of new advances in aesthetic medicine. This month, more than 20,000 attendees will descend on San Francisco for the annual meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD). On page 34, we offer a preview of the meeting, including a list of top injectable, laser and practice management sessions for providers who offer noninvasive cosmetic procedures. You'll also have a chance to see some of the new products and devices that will debut at the meeting and learn about special promotions available to attendees. In addition to learning about the latest tools and techniques, in this issue you will fi nd articles that help to support the growth and fi nancial health of your private practice, including "Managing Cash Flow" on page 18 and "Recruitment Strategies" on page 44.
