NEWS & EVENTS 80 MARCH 2015 | Med Esthetics dermoscopy images containing over 3,000 cases of melanoma, atypical le- sions, and benign lesions—the technol- ogy recognized diseased states with a performance of 97% sensitivity and 95% specifi city. "Skin cancer is a major public health problem. Treatment options exist, with the best outcomes attained through early detection," said Allan Halpern, MD, chief of dermatology service at Memorial Sloan Kettering. "Accurately distinguishing the earliest cancers from concerning benign lesions can be very challenging even for dermatologists, so having the aid of analytics that can recognize medical images and detect small variations over time could vastly improve patient prognoses." THERMITIGHT EFFECTIVE FOR SKIN TIGHTENING In a retrospective study published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology (Decem- ber 2014), Douglas J. Key, MD, et al, analyzed the safety and effi cacy of Ther- miTight, an RF-based device that uses percutaneous probes to deliver energy for subdermal heating. Researchers evaluated 35 patients who underwent ThermiTight treatments under the chin and in the jowls. Probe temperature was set and maintained between 50°C and 60°C, with the clinical endpoint being a 42°C epidermal tem- perature. The probe was guided to treat a surface area of 3.0cm 2 every two min- utes. Blinded reviewers were randomly presented with photographs (taken at baseline and 30 days post-treatment) that they rated using a 4.0 skin laxity scale. The reviewers correctly identifi ed whether a photo was taken at baseline or postprocedure 89% of the time, and the statistically signifi cant (P < 0.0001) mean skin laxity score change was -0.78. No adverse events were reported. The researchers concluded that the Thermi- Tight protocol is safe and effective for skin tightening.
