EDITOR'S NOTE EDITORIAL ADVISORY BOARD Medical Devices Gain an Ally The start of 2013 marks the launch of a new public-private partnership that is likely to benet physicians in the medical aesthetics industry. The United States Food & Drug Administration has joined the Medical Device Innovation Consortium (MDIC, deviceconsortium.org), founded by biomedical science trade association LifeScience Alley. The MDIC is an independent, nonprot corporation that was created to promote medical device regulatory science with a focus on speeding the development, assessment and review of new medical devices. Its creation follows on the heels of the FDAs review of the existing 510(k) device approval process. The MDIC reports that it will receive input from industry, government and other nonprot organizations as part of its efforts to prioritize the regulatory science needs of the medical device community and fund projects that help simplify the pathway to market for new technologies and the process of medical device design. One of the consortiums key goals is to bolster investment in regulatory science research to develop new tools, models and methods that may be utilized to better and more efciently Inga Hansen evaluate new devices. By sharing and leveraging resources, Executive Editor/Associate Publisher MDIC may help the industry to be better equipped to bring One of the consortium's key goals is to bolster investment in regulatory science research. safe and effective medical devices to market more quickly and at a lower cost, said Jeffrey Shuren, MD, JD, director of the FDAs Center for Devices and Radiological Health. Energy-based aesthetic devices have become a cornerstone of cosmetic medicine, and their applications continue to expand. On page 28, leading dermatologists and plastic surgeons share their top off-the-face treatment protocols that combine injectables, laser treatments and RF-based technologies to reduce the signs of aging on the neck, hands and legs. While practitioners and patients have witnessed the dramatic results gleaned from energy-based devices, questions remain on how these devices affect changes in skin texture and tone and how long these changes last. On page 76, writer Linda W. Lewis speaks with the researchers behind a new study that revealed genetic changes related to the aging process following treatment with IPL. The coming year is sure to reveal more innovations in both technology and treatment protocols based on continuing research and clinical experience, and we look forward to covering those innovations for you. We wish you all a happy and prosperous 2013. ihansen@creativeage.com 818.782.7328, ext. 289 2 JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2013 | MedEsthetics Mary Lee Amerian, MD Santa Monica Laser and Skin Care Center, Santa Monica, CA Saul R.
